The School of Human Ecology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design.
Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern University is a Carnegie Doctoral/R2 institution with a focus on public-impact research, serving over 25,500 students on three beautiful campuses in Statesboro, Savannah, and Hinesville, and via a growing online program. Within this setting is the multi-disciplinary School of Human Ecology, which is an applied research and creative activity unit serving over 600 undergraduate majors. The school offers programs in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design, Human Development and Family Science, Interior Design, and Recreation and Tourism Management. The Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design Program offers courses in a variety of modalities (e.g., face to face, hybrid, and online) as well as a minor. Students gain hands-on experience through study trips such as the New York Study Tour and a required internship. The program has dedicated faculty who offer student-centered instruction and engage with students outside of the classroom in activities such as mentoring and undergraduate research.

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (CBSS) embraces Georgia Sothern's research impact area on vibrant communities, to include public services, community health and wellbeing, and quality of life.CBSS has a particular interest in furthering research and scholarship in the area of community resilience.Communities must continuously innovate and adapt to meet the unique social, economic, technological, and environmental challenges and opportunities in their area. Community resilience represents the capacity to absorb, improve, and transform in the face of these challenges.Overall resilience is determined by specific community capacities and social dimensions thatprovide communities with the ability to act collectively and implement a coordinatedresponse. We seek scholars who engage in the work of building community capacityfor resilient communities, broadly defined.Research in the area of Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design fits well within the focus area of community resilience as clothing and textiles have significant impact on a community's social, economic, technological, and environmental well-being.

Position Description. Reporting to the school chair, the Assistant/Associate Professor of Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design requires undergraduate teaching, research and/or creative scholarship, and participation in service responsibilities. The position is an academic (10 month) tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in Fashion Merchandising or Apparel Design, or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Fashion Merchandising or Apparel Design, by August 1, 2024.
Commitment to teaching undergraduate students and an ability to teach in a variety of modalities, including face to face, online, and hybrid.
Willingness to engage in a robust research agenda.
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
Minimum of 5 years full-time college/university teaching experience at the assistant professor level is required for the rank of associate professor, along with a strong record of research and service with publications and presentations in professional venues.

Preferred Qualifications:


For Assistant Professor rank:

A minimum of one year of college/university teaching
Experience teaching online courses
Experience working in the clothing and textile industry
Proficiency with textile and apparel industry technology
Willingness to engage in the community resilience research focus, broadly defined. Areas of focus could include community's social, economic, technological, and environmental well-being

For Associate Professor Rank:

Established research agenda in the textile and apparel field
Willingness to engage in the community resilience research focus, broadly defined. Areas of focus could include community's social, economic, technological, and environmental well-being
Experience working in the clothing and textile industry
Proficiency with textile and apparel industry technology
Demonstrated ability to build relationships with firms/organizations in the fashion industry
Online teaching experience
Experience supervising interns, study tours, and/or advising students

Conditions of Employment:

Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
All work (with limited exceptions such as research and study abroad and outside activities such as grading and email correspondence) for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.
Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus.
Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
